Airdrop Low-Level

IP Course Evaluation - MQT Block 1 Airdrop Skills

OBJECTIVE

Evaluate the IP candidate's ability to demonstrate and teach C-17/C-130 style simulated airdrop procedures using the SLOW-POP-IP-DROP-ESCAPE profile. The candidate must execute low-level navigation and drop runs to standard while providing clear instructional commentary on timing, crew calls, TOT management, abort criteria, and corrective techniques.

EVALUATION AREAS

SLOW-POP-IP-DROP-ESCAPE Profile

  • SLOW: Deceleration point, configuration, speed management
  • POP: S-curve climb from low-level to drop altitude
  • IP: Initial Point crossing, timing start, final stabilization
  • DROP: Green light execution, wings level, CARP
  • ESCAPE: Acceleration, egress, configuration cleanup

Low-Level Navigation

  • Terrain following: 300-500 ft AGL altitude maintenance
  • Checkpoint timing: Speed adjustments, TOT calculations
  • Route structure: Slowdown point, pop-up point, IP, DZ, EP
  • SA: Terrain awareness, fuel management, abort criteria

Timing & Crew Coordination

  • TOT management: ±30 second accuracy requirement
  • Timing calls: IP INBOUND, 1 MINUTE, 30 SECONDS, GREEN LIGHT, LOAD CLEAR
  • Drop execution: Wings level, stable parameters through DZ
  • Abort criteria: Red light conditions, go-around procedures

Instructional Demonstration

  • Profile teaching: Explain each phase during execution
  • Common errors: Late slowdown, pop-up altitude, timing drift, wings not level
  • Corrections: Speed adjustments, S-turns for timing, altitude recovery
  • Safety: Terrain clearance, abort decision making, CFIT awareness

AIRDROP TOLERANCES

±50 ft

Low-Level Alt

±25 ft

Drop Altitude

±5 kts

Drop Speed

±15 sec

TOT

IP candidates must demonstrate tighter tolerances than student standards.

COMPLETION STANDARDS

IP candidates must demonstrate:

  • Execute minimum 2 complete SLOW-POP-IP-DROP-ESCAPE profiles
  • Maintain low-level altitude within tolerances during ingress
  • Achieve TOT within ±15 seconds on all drops
  • Execute all timing calls correctly and clearly
  • Provide clear instructional commentary throughout profile
  • Identify common student errors and demonstrate corrections

Pass: Demonstrate expert airdrop execution with effective instructional delivery
