Local Area / Basic Handling / Basic Formation

vACC MQ1 | Local procedures execution and basic formation proficiency

OBJECTIVE

Execute a local area training sortie with an instructor demonstrating safe aircraft handling, adherence to local procedures, communications discipline, and basic two-ship formation skills (rejoin, route, and position keeping) sufficient to progress to tactical sortie execution.

EXECUTION

Pre-Flight

  • • Brief local procedures, weather, NOTAMs, and training rules (TRs)
  • • Review comm plan: ATC responsibilities (lead) and tactical frequency usage
  • • Verify MWS basics: nav plan, basic sensor pages, countermeasure readiness (as applicable)

Departure & Setup

  • • Execute standard taxi/takeoff flow with correct readbacks and runway discipline
  • • Navigate to local working area/training route (TR) and establish in assigned block
  • • Ops check: fuel state, comms, flight controls, "knock-it-off" review

Basic Handling

  • • Straight-and-level, standard rate turns, climbs/descents, speed changes as briefed
  • • Demonstrate stable aircraft control during configuration changes (if applicable)
  • • Demonstrate basic use of trim/autopilot (if used) without losing SA

Basic Formation

  • • Rejoin: briefed technique and safe closure control
  • • Route: maintain stable position on lead, small corrections
  • • Crossunder / position changes (only as briefed, with deconfliction)
  • • Lost sight procedures: "Blind" calls and separation rules

Safety Note

If visual is lost, call "Blind" immediately. Prioritize deconfliction over "staying in formation." Instructor OR student may direct a KIO at any time.

Recovery

  • • RTB in accordance with local procedures (overhead/straight-in as instructed)
  • • Pattern discipline and stabilized approach
  • • Taxi-in and shutdown (if applicable) with debrief
