VFR Patterns (Civilian & Military)
IP Course Evaluation - UPT Block 1 Pattern Skills
OBJECTIVE
Evaluate the IP candidate's ability to demonstrate and teach VFR traffic patterns at both civilian and military airfields. The candidate must execute patterns to standard while providing clear instructional commentary on procedures, common student errors, and corrective techniques for towered/untowered operations, overhead breaks, and closed traffic patterns.
EVALUATION AREAS
Civilian VFR Patterns
- • Towered operations: Pattern entry, ATC communications, sequencing
- • Untowered operations: CTAF procedures, position reporting, see-and-avoid
- • Standard pattern: Downwind, base, final - proper altitudes and speeds
- • Closed traffic: Touch-and-go procedures, go-around decision making
Military VFR Patterns
- • Overhead break: Initial, break timing, spacing, perch turn
- • Closed pattern: High-speed pattern, interval maintenance
- • Military communications: Proper phraseology, brevity codes
- • Multiple aircraft: Formation recovery, spacing techniques
Instructional Demonstration
- • Teaching points: Explain key concepts during execution
- • Common errors: Identify and describe typical student mistakes
- • Corrections: Demonstrate appropriate corrective techniques
- • Safety: Emphasize critical safety considerations
FLIGHT TOLERANCES
±100 ft
Pattern Altitude
±10 kts
Pattern Airspeed
±5°
Break Timing
Tighter tolerances than student standards - IP candidates must demonstrate expert-level precision.
COMPLETION STANDARDS
IP candidates must demonstrate:
- • Execute minimum 2 civilian patterns (1 towered, 1 untowered)
- • Execute minimum 2 military overhead patterns with proper break
- • Maintain all tolerances while providing instructional commentary
- • Correctly identify and explain at least 3 common student errors
- • Demonstrate appropriate corrective techniques for each error
Pass: Demonstrate expert pattern execution with effective instructional delivery
